Do More Cylinders Mean More Engine Life?

You love your four cylinder fuel efficient car. It does the job and gets you where you need to go. However, you keep wondering if those folks in the V8 Buick or Lincoln are going to get more life out of their ride. The answer is maybe, and perhaps not for the reason that you think.

All cylinders, regardless of how many there are, rotate at the same speed, they all fire once for every two rotations of the engine’s crankshaft. It would seem that all cylinders are created equal, and they are! The difference is that more cylinders create more torque, which means less wear on components like transmissions.

Today, the efficiency of power transfer within engines has become so refined, that even this torque differential doesn’t mean much for extending engine life. This is why you see big eight cylinder vehicles going the way of the dinosaurs.

No matter how many cylinders you have, bring your vehicle in to have its spark plugs inspected to keep it purring like a kitten.
