I think we have all been in a car when the driver backs up and before he comes to a complete stop he puts the car into drive and you just wonder if he is wrecking his automatic transmission. Or, maybe you do that yourself!
Given that automatic transmissions are very sophisticated, computer controlled and fluid covered entities, they are pretty resilient beings. If you are going one or two miles per hour, you are probably doing very minimal damage to your transmission. Not really enough to shorten the life of your car. However, it is definitely not good for your transmission. If you are going four to five miles an hour and shift the transmission from reverse into drive, there is a good chance you will be doing significant damage to your automatic transmission over time.
If you have an automatic transmission, make sure you come to a complete stop before changing direction, either way. Doing so will ensure that you get the maximum life out of your transmission and help make sure your car stays on the road as long as it can.
