I Changed My Car Battery, Digital Odometer Still Has Right Mileage

You may have noticed this interesting little aspect of modern vehicles. If you disconnect all the power from the car, the odometer still displays the correct mileage when you put the new battery in. How does ths happen? Does my odometer have a mini battery of its own?

The answer is that your odometer does not have a battery of its own, instead it has a technology known as PROM. This stands for Programmable Read-Only Memory. It is like a flash drive that you can only record onto and never edit or delete. For example, if you have a flash drive, it keeps the information on it even when it is not plugged into a computer. Same thing. Except you cannot edit or delete the odometer, which keeps us all honest.
