My Car Has A Rattle. Can’t Seem To Locate Where It’s Coming From

A customer told me they kept hearing this rattle coming from just in front of the front seat, under the car. They had no idea what it was, especially since no warning or check engine light was on. Everything seemed to be running just fine, all there was, was this annoying, somtimes loud rattle that you could also, sometimes, feel. It would shake the seats.

It occurred to me that the noise as related to the exhaust system. My first guess was that it was the heat shield around the catalytic converter. It had become loose and that’s what’s rattling. Why did I think that? Well, first, since there’s no warning light or computer code, that suggests that it’s not an engine issue.

Our customer brought the car in and we put the car up on the lift. We had someone then rev the engine to different speeds and try to make the noise occur. If we can get it to make the noise on the lift, the mechanic under the car should be able to find the cause in a matter of seconds.

Of course, if you notice something loose when the car is up on the lift, that kind of makes the problem simple to solve!

Fortunately, I was right. It was the heat shield around the catalytic converter, which we replaced and the customer went merrily on their way.
